Soton Match Thread

Here they all come. It's been good enough so far. Calm down.
If Barnes was fit (even 80%) I wouldn’t have Vardy start another game for us. Another awful miss tonight and it could easily cost us. Real hit and hope finishing. Everything he touched turned to sheete.

At the moment for some reason when Tielemans and Maddison thread a ball for him it gets caught in his feet time after time after time. Just not at it.

CBC he’s right though, we need to attack with pace at least some of the time, and why the fuck do we bring a centre forward into defence against 10 men

Difficult watch . JM ambling around and shooting from everywhere, JV should have scored but still snatching at chances.

But am I wrong? It was poor by the standards they've set so far. In the context of needing to finish 3rd it was poor. Playing against 10 men for 80 minutes, also poor. I'm hardly jumping up and down shouting "Brendan out" am I?
We didn't play well but my point was, why start criticising the tippy tappy stuff now and wanting more urgency when it's served us well enough since Rodgers has been here. It may come as a shock to some people but we aren't going to win every game.

I was grumbled at for lambasting our 1st half against Palace, but I don't think my eyes deceived me.
We look like a team that's full of anxiety from the pressure of the situation.
This game feels like a defeat. We played for 80mins against 10 men and against a team that are on the perverbial beach. I just couldn't see a Chelsea, Man United or Liverpool letting them off the hook.
Extremely disappointing, and probably very costly in the long term.

Won 2. Drawn 1. Lost 2. Not exactly top 3 material though huh?

Have you ever had a good word to say about Vardy? Strange obsession

Perez did more in his first 10 minutes than Tielemans has managed in the last 2 games and Vardy in the last 20.

Nacho set up the goal.
Thanks for the info, I know he did.
One good cross in a 90 minute match = good game in your book does it.
If you reckon Perez did what was asked of him fir that 45 mins he was on the pitch then fair play to you.

I thought Perez kept the ball tight and put two brilliant balls into the box. Both wasted. He more effective in a ‘team’ performance than serial coont Maddison who essentially is looking to play for England in everything he does and couldn’t give a sugary fook about our club.

You wouldn’t have Vardy start another game for us? Are you fucking serious? We’re in the FA Cup Final because of him. He may not be scoring, but not playing him would be madness. He still scares the shit out of the opposition.

I didn't get that feeling at all. I would say that is projecting your own anxiety onto the team. Not saying I thought the performance was good and certainly not that the passing was up to snuff but tonight looked more tired than anxious to me.

Difficult to separate the two imo. Seen it in cup finals at Wembley, players looking like they are wading through treacle, not necessarily knackered but nerves affecting the performance. Sloppy passing, poor decision making, and generally not at it

For the free kick which brought their goal, why not have Vardy or Ian standing on the half way line ready for a break? With all the side defending teams can also shove 9 of their men in the box. This applies to Oppo corners as well.

That’s right. 20 odd games. 1 goal. Missing on average 2 clear cut chances per game, every game at the moment. Plus worse still he is snatching at everything. Worse than that when a ball is threaded through to him he is fumbling them. Nothing is flowing. Nothing is coming naturally. He needs 15,000-30,0000 to call his wife a tart or him a prick to get his edge back at this rate. He doesn’t press any more (stats show that). His chance conversation ratio is the worst it’s been since 2017. He can’t hold the ball up. Vardy on form scores that chance today or scores the next. Barnes would be a better option if fit as stated.

Barnes... Barnes....Barnes....is injured. So that's not an option.

Given that, what's your move? Perez up front? He hardly got the pulse racing.
Recall Hirst?
Nacho on his own and Under out wide?

Or just keeps flogging your nemesis...

As stated in the beginning IF Barnes was 80% fit I wouldn’t start Vardy again.

If 1 in 20 (when the goalkeeper dives out of the way) is the kinda stats you want from your main striker then fine. But not for me. If Perez had pace I would play him alongside Nacho. He doesn’t. It’s a non event. Just funny as I haven’t heard from the hoards about Vardy not getting the service as the much heralded excuse. Tonight he should’ve scored. The same is true every game he’s played in the last 20. Scores today and the pressure is off. If the run continues we can’t rely on Maddison scoring from outside the area and or Nacho getting us out of a hole every game.

Lucky to get a point tonight, poor show from our attacking players but if I’m honest I would have taken a point before we kicked off...

Wasn’t that what Ranieri did in 2016? It spooks the opposition. It’s a great shout. Even just Vardy would mean they’d leave two with him at least.

You realise the absolute bottle the 2016 team had. A bunch of generally freebies who suddenly stepped upj the plate big time. The pressure must have been enormous on the players themselves. A quite unreal experience as is every year which move to the next.

Ripper look at the form guide and that’s what the chasing pack have been achieving. 2 wins in 5 games is about right. I’m not saying it’s good we need to do better.

It’s another example how hard it is to sustain and earn a top 4 position without being one of the 6. We failed last season by the skin of our teeth and we’re crawling over the line now. I do think we have a bit of an eye on the final.

I have to say I do like Hasenhuttl he really does have his players playing for him.

Last night was the poorest display for a few years. He needs to change something, maybe start with Albrighton v Newcastle?

We've played a lot worse over the last few seasons. We've played worse in the last few games (the cup semi was a poor, poor game for a kick off). At least yday we created supposedly 22 chances. Had Ndidi's chance fell to Ricardo, Castagne, Maddison or Tielemans I think we'd have scored. It didn't. We move on.

I don't think it has anything to do with the cup either. Potentially not even tired legs. This game and last we don't have the players or players in their prime to break down those type of defences.....its made worse when players like Castagne (for whatever reason) don't look to get beyond their last man. Vardy is a waste of a spot when a team sit deep. Maddison is way off his 'peak'. Tielemans has had a couple of poor games in a row when he's been ineffective. Just getting the box out wideon the edge of the box and hitting it in time and time again isn't going to work. Even when we've worked it down the sides cutting the ball back when we don't get bodies in the box isn't working either. Without a Mahrez type or someone that can commit players (Barnes) then we'll struggle. Newcastle won't be easy - likewise Chelsea - whereas Man Utd and Spurs will give us chances. Going to be a bumpy ride.

I agree we lack guile, the ability in one on one situations to beat a man, that's why I thought of Under last night who has skill in that area just to try and open them up
As they we soaking it up quite well and our playmakers were not up to it

I think we all need to calm down and chill.

Brendan needs to relax the lads before the Newcastle game. We’re a better team with better players than Newcastle. Play to our strengths and the 3 points are ours.

He needs to take any pressure off them and get them playing with composure and without fear again. He should take them out to make pizzas ... or Ulster Fry with soda bread.

And WHU and Liverpool both have to get something just to stay in touch.
