I did too. Lost 9-0 to Catherine Street. I was our left wing, touched the ball twice all game.

Taylor Street school always entered it but never did any good, they played the home games at Martin Street.

When I was at junior school, late sixties/early seventies the early stages of the Rice Bowl was played in Areas, our nemises was always Albert Road of Hinckley , we never made it through to play city or county teams. Anyone remember The Area Sports and The County Sports?

Newbold Verdon junior school won it 5 times in I think, 6 years and were runners up in the year they didn't win it. That was in the late 50's early 60's.

There is a history of The Rice Bowl, including a list of all the winners since it's first competition in the early 30's on the website of the Leicestershire Schools FA

Decent record for Whitehall, my 'alma mater'.
'76 was the final I remember watching...

“THE RICE BOWL” .

The Rice Bowl, or to give it its full title “The Montague John Rice Trophy” was manufactured in Sheffield in 1919 and donated to Leicestershire Schools F.A. in March 1934. The presentation to the Association was made by the Rice family, owners of a local boot and shoe factory in Syston. Mr. M. J. Rice was a Director of Leicester Fosse and Leicester City FC. The trophy has been the pride of Leicestershire Schools F.A. ever since the first final in the 1934-35 season.

The first recorded final was in the spring of 1935 when the trophy was won by Clarendon Park School - now better known as St. John’s Primary School. In the first ten years the trophy only left the city once (despite the competition being open to primary schools in the city and county), when, in 1938 it was won by Kegworth Council School. Newry Junior School achieved the first-ever hat trick of victories in 1951/52/53 - Leicester City legend Graham Cross was in the latter team. The limelight then switched to the county with Newbold Verdon Primary School winning the trophy five years out of six in 1956/57/58/60/61 - they were beaten finalists in 1959! City schools dominated the sixties and seventies with wins by Overdale, Whitehall, Braunstone Frith, New Parks House and Scraptoft Valley Schools. The fiftieth anniversary of the Rice Bowl saw the final hosted by Leicester City FC, with Braunstone Frith beating Ravenhurst by two goals to one.
In recent years, the final has been held at the King Power Stadium.

I've checked in with my Whatsapp Brain Pool this morning, and 3 confirmations of Billing Cup
Good work! These days I'm reassured by any event that contradicts my default concerns about losing my marbles – however insignificant...

i'm sure l played in it, (the Rice Bowl) and i'm sure Waterleys weren't any good. Think it was a couple of years before this though. Some crap school teams about then, remember Hastings being probably the worst, actually thats high schools weren't it, we seemed to get double figures against some of them each time we played. South Wigston high school had some good players with some on City's books but as a team they were no good either.

The worst team in our area was St Martins Convent Stoke Golding, team cried out for a decent right footer.

I think it was a bit down to luck of the draw as to how good an intake of pupils blessed with ability you had in the first place, and how enthusiastic the games master was?.
Not everyone was keen to play or organise12 lads on a cold Saturday morning after catching 2 buses for an away game that kicked off at 9.0am.

l went to Abington (occasionally) and 3 teams were pretty equal, they were us Bushloe and Gartree. I missed an open goal v Gartree once due to forgotting my boots and having to play in someone elses plimmies 2 sizes too big, thats my excuse anyway. We also played Bushloe at the last game of the season and Bushloe had been in the papers as the best team in the area as they won every single game all season. The whole of both schools watched it, and l missed another nailed on goal, but we won and burst their bubble. I still use that game to wind my mate up who played for them, he says he can't remember it ! hes a liar ! He went on to play a game or 2 for Peterborough, to be fair they had some good players.

As I remember it the Football Matches at High School (Heathfield) mainly took place on a Saturday morning against Hastings, Mount Grace and St Martins. All three years played at the same time, We had a massive sports field with 3 football pitches. We boarded 2 Robbo buses for away games. I've got a feeling we played Rawlings, Lancaster Road and Judgemeadow too.

Wigston bang next door to Bushloe, Gartree was Oadby, funny how the other Oadby school wasn't so good.

I played for Hastings High in my second year. We played away at one of the Leicester schools and Carl Jeyes was in goal for them. Was it Gartree?

I was at Whitehall with his younger brother Neil – as they lived about 100 yards from the school gate, I'd bet Carl also went there...
