Tielemans

It has saved us from these potential back page headlines early in the new season

‘Resurgent Arsenal’

‘A masterful performance by Youri Tielemens helps the gunners put five past his old club’

I get the impression he's not taken with Arsenal* and wants a better option and is prepared to wait for it

Will sign another year on his contract not out of commitment to us but so we get a fee next year.

*he'll now sign for them within the week.

I hope he stays plays well all season for us , it has to be good for both party's

I totally agree. A win/win all round. There’s no doubt 6 months ago Youri thought he was going to a CL club and not just an English one but possibly Juve RM etc. His form has certainly had an effect on this and they’ve all thought no despite being able to pick him up for a song. The fact is that 12 months ago I thought Maddison was possibly finished. Months of awful performances but look at him this season especially latterly.
If he signs for another year he’ll be putting in 100% effort to put himself in the shop window. However I honestly believe that with the right signings and no Europe we have a great chance of a top 6 finish. Be a complete irony if we qualified for the CL. What would he do then. Anyway let’s see. I hope he stays.

I am a big fan of Tielemans (which probably explains why with a few exceptions I didn't think he was playing quite as badly as most others but would certainly agree that generally his performances over the season - 2nd half especially - were generally not what we were accustomed to or what we need, even taking into account any mitigating personnel changes). What concerns me though, especially when you take into account his earlier career at Monaco (albeit when he was much younger), is when there is uncertainty in his life and career how able is he to push that aside and to perform to the level that we and, if he coverts a move, he needs. If he cannot then I think how will 12 more months be any different because it is hard to see how there won't be similar uncertainty during that time. Personally I very much want him to stay but feel that all parties need to understand where they stand in order for us to benefit.

Like LG if he wins an extension I cannot see anything but a far more motivated player. If he wants his move to a CL team, and probably abroad, and presumably one that is likely to go deep into the competition, he will need to up the anti, uncertainty or not.

And if we do qualify again, and it’s a big if as we know how tough an ask that is, then it will definitely give him a decision to make.

if he does sign again (which I hope) Brendan needs to solve the problem that he struggled with all last season. With Ndidi as DM it is impossible to play Maddison, KDH and Tielemans in central roles. He either has to drop one or play one out of position. Still not sure he knows which is best option.

KDH will be sacrificed.

As good as he is, he's second fiddle when Ndidi is fit.

I love the optimism but in reality who out of this seasons top 4 do you honestly think we could replace? I hate to say it but Spurs snuck 4th this time and seem to be doing business that will only make them stronger, Arsenal too, as much as I’m sure we’d all love another go at champions league sadly in my opinion it’s drifting further away, we had our chance with two fifth and while other sides have kicked on we’ve been treading water

The reason I’m saying it is this

1). We need to stay injury free especially to important players
2). No Euro football
3). We’ll have very few players at the WC. The ‘big’ boys will have everyone. This WC is 4 days shorter than any other WC. The amount they’ll play if you include extra time is crazy. They’re straight back into the PL the following week. By the end of the season the amount of games the likes of Kane etc could have played will be ridiculous in such a short time.
4). I truly believe someone will come out of the pack this season into the top 6. Not sure who but it’ll be a club not in Europe and few players at the WC

But that sort of logic completely undermines whoever it was that came on here and dissed anyone who claimed Tielemans tails off in the past when he is head's turned. Ergo you must be wrong. :ROFLMAO:

Every season starts with the competition looking tough on paper...but there's always a crisis at at least one of those 'bigger' boys...often 2 or 3 of them.

You'd expect Liverpool and man city to be strong again (although Liverpool squad is going through some changes, so...)
Chelsea new owners, uncertainty.
Man Utd who knows, the new guy is not coming from the biggest league.
Conte often seems to upset his bosses / squad in year 2
Arsenal will be arsenal

and as said above the world cup will have huge implications for those squads full of internationals.

This year is a real chance.

Arsenal had no European football last season and ended up fifth.

Spurs we’re knocked out early and just sneaked fourth.

West Ham had a decent season last time but have European football again this season which I’m sure will harm them.

Keeping him for a year and hoping he plays well due to “shop window” is like sticking a plaster over a gaping hole.
His agent will be working frantically in the background making arrangements as he’s their prize asset, they have 17 players on their books and he’s their superstar by a country mile so keeping him happy is a wise move, not to mention a financially sound one. This means we will be lucky to get a month of solid play out of him before somethings whispered in his ear. We need to sign a replacement, say thanks, shake his hand and move on.

M U had a similar problem with Pogba last season. He didn't want to stay but nobody came up with the dosh this time last year.
So he just tossed it off last season, left, and his club got nothing.

He's got a contract, if we won't go we can't make him

I'd say Pogba is a stroppy sod and thinks he's a galactico. I wouldn't put Tielemans in the same category.

You never know but there is a decent chance we'll get at least another very decent season out of him. He doesn't strike me as a primadonna or unprofessional.

I think first of all he's extremely disappointed that we didn't get into the CL when we had the chance. That might be his first and main reason for being open to moving on.

I don't think Rodgers would have any hesitation in dropping Tielemans if his attitude was a problem - see Soumare, for example. But Rodgers is on record saying that he continually picks Tielemans because his attitude and professionalism are exemplary. I know he had a poor season last year by his standards, but maybe it wasn't his attitude that was the problem?

If Tielemans is still with us this season, he'll be a regular starter irrespective of whether he's signed a new contract or not.

To add also, Tielemans is actually a good player, & even on a bad day, is still pretty much the only one capable of effective passes.

Whereas Soumare is just...not very good.
