When footballers were skint

Just finished this very good book by Jon Henderson, some great insights into the days of maximum wage and the bad old ways of chairmen holding on to your contract.
Our very own Howard Riley is interviewed, he got a ten shilling note for signing on.

Alan Young told me that when signed for Leicester he was on £300 a week and Jock Wallace promised him £100 a week extra if they got promoted in that first season

My Dad used to work at a factory on the corner of Northgate Street & Pringle Street. He used to chat to Frank McLintock who worked at Pitchers the Builders during the summer holidays to supplement his wages.

Could you imagine the modern day footballer working at Jelsons during the summer?

I was at Nottingham college 1981-82 as a young sparky. Cloughie sent all of his apprentices there to learn a trade in case they didn't make it.

We had some 6 - a - side team !

Can't imagine the little academy darlings these days putting up with manual labour and the bash bollock and bite.
