VAR

I think it's getting better. Most or maybe all major decisions at the EUROs have been correct I think - at least I don't recall any major controversy so far. I also think they're trying to abstain from micromanaging the games too much. All in all a step in the right direction.

The only thing I'm struggling with is the offside rule. The term 'interfering with play' seems rather arbitrary.

Definitely some lessons to be learned. Decisions are being made much quicker which is good.

Still a few things to tidy up, intent needs more consideration with fouls and handballs and offsides should be decided not on extremities but on the relative positions of 'centre of mass.

Interfering with play is just silly. If you are a forward in the opposition box during an attack and you are not interfering with play, what the hell are you doing there?

Much as I despise it in principle, I suppose VAR in itself isnt the problem. Its the Premier League's interpretation of some of the laws of the game, and the way they are implemented by Stockley Park.

They had a conversation with an ex-referee on Austrian TV last night. The refs are practically in constant conversation about events on the pitch, so there is definitely much more going on behind the scenes than the selected VAR decisions everybody sees. I think it helps both the referees and the flow of the games, and they are getting a lot right.

Not sure whether it's anything to do with it but we've also seen very few "herds" of player surrounding the referee.

Two more snippets of information on VAR and refereeing in general:

1) The video referee apparently sits in the UEFA headquarters in Switzerland (!!), and he has three (!) assistants by his side. Sounds like there is a lot of surveillance going on during the games.

2) VAR did not interfere with the soft penalty in the DEN-RUS game yesterday as it wasn't an obviously wrong decision by the referee but one that is down to interpretation. There was physical contact, and perhaps the referee judged that the Russian player tripped over the defenders leg. So, VAR and the video referee don't always interfere.

VAR started the tournament brilliantly...but seems to be getting worse.

e.g. that lukaku "offside" goal yesterday...some very strange line drawing on that one....two freeze frames showed, fractions different on the assist pass being made. one looked just onside, one just offside. neither definitive on when the pass is "made".
if its that close, surely the benefit has to go to attacker.
