Uber drivers are workers

Fair play to them. A victory for the little man, against The Man.

The Gig Economy can work well for some. Less well for others.

If I understand it this means they now employees of Uber which means they get Holiday and sick pay, also Uber will have to pay employers NI and stop PAYE.

I can't see this keeping the fares down

Correct

Tricky one- but ultimately paying people when they are at work and allowing them basic rights like sick pay and holidays is probably the overriding principle in the 21st century .
We might have to pay a bit more for our take away deliveries but hey ho.
There will be folks who lose income sadly .

So we should scrap all workers rights just so people can get products and services on the cheap?

They are already suing them already for past booking practises.

£25,000 a driver is being talked about.

Out of interest what would you keep?
SSP is paid by the tax payer
Paid Holidays - Just pay everyone what they're worth then there's no need for add ons
Allotted ours - dunno what that means
Redundancy pay is paid by the tax payer

But I was tekkin da piss

Isn't the main change that Uber drivers will now need to be paid even when just logged on to the app and available for hire, not just when they have a fare?
Black cabbies will be joining Uber in their droves – sit in the queuing pen at Heathrow for 6 hours and get paid for all of it...

I thought that mini-cabs and black cabs had spent the past few years moaning that they barely earn minimum wage, given that they spend so much time sitting around without a fare?

Uber is most prevalent in London.

London is deserted and the population is dropping through the floor.

Wont be many of them left.

The only time I've ever taken an Uber was with some notable posters off here, I was completely confused and bewildered by the complete lack of a row about what the fella was trying to charge us when we got to Arse's ground. Decades of multiple minicabs per week's worth of arguing experience rendered obsolete at a stroke, just like that ☹️

I don't know what it's like over there in the UK but here in california they passed a law to treat uber/lyft drivers as perm employees as above a while back.
The problem was, a lot of uber/lyft drivers were doing it as a second job and didn't want to be classed as perm employees, and the comanies baulked at paying extra costs for perm employees.
it went to a public vote and was overturned in nov 2020.
Forcibly making them perm or not is the problem, what they should do is let individual drivers opt in/out of perm status, that way people who have it as a second job can opt out, people who have it as a primary can opt in.
If the vote failed, both uber/lyft threatened to pull out of california, i don't know if they'll make the same threat to the whole of the UK, since a large proportion of the cost of making somebody perm over here is to provide healthcare, you don't have that since you have the wonderful nhs.
