Tony Brien RIP

I remember Tony Brien from his time at Chesterfield FC, Dublin born Tony was a a young centre half that was promoted to the Leicester first team around 1987, but despite starting a few games and showing promise he was allowed to move to Chesterfield for a fee of £90,000, a big fee for a 4th tier club at that time and he quickly became a fans favourite. Living in Derbyshire for many years I often saw Tony play at the old Saltergate ground, he was an intelligent CH, read the game well and was possibly to good for that level. He played over 200 games for the Spireites and after 6 years moved in a player exchange to Rotherham. He later played a few games for Sheffield Wednesday, Hull and WBA but was forced to retire at the young age of 28 with a hip problem. Tony Brien was often at the Chesterfield games and was said said to be a lovely man, I am sure they will have a minutes applause at their home game this Saturday. Can't believe he's gone at such a young age. RIP Tony
