This idea that we are free to do what we want when we want seems to me to have been part of the Western world's failure to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

We are a free country but that doesn't mean we can do completely and say everything we please and hide behind calling it "an opinion".

If there is a virus ravaging the population then we need to modify our behaviour to suit. Seems too many have been unable to do this and that has contributed to our problems whereas other less "free" countries have managed to keep the virus under control.

Really? She wanted a return to Victorian values, believed in the free market and laissez faire approach as the answer to society, sell off the council houses as a way of breaking union membership, privatising national industries and selling shares to the working class. All contributed to the individual thinking about themselves more.

Arlesey is clearly not applying it in the way that Nikita Krushchev meant. Does it matter, those who posted knew what he meant?

I agree that Thatcher dismantled what was left of Society. And the current mob have no inclination to reinstate it ever.

Strange, or perhaps not, that you're not pulling up bnet for accusing people of being 'indoctrinated' or 'having limited brain cells'.
Or AFC for believeing that some of us are happy to accept 'serfdom'.

Serfdom, as I have said elsewhere is a difficult world as I implies the kind of servitude that was commonplace in medieval times.

Twenty first century 'serfdom' will be different, the chains will be electronic rather than iron and social pressures will keep most people in line. Reliance on the state will be increased, jobs will be scarce and mostly within their control. Access to healthcare, education, housing etc will be limited and dependent upon your status.

Most importantly there will be a financial and social rigidity that will make attempts to better yourself and your family pointless. I would not say that people are happy about this, just that they do not see it coming and don't think about it.
 
The endgame of the call for freedoms on the right is not personal freedom, it's economic freedom by the people that hold the power.
Their fear is govt interference in their business affairs, that costs them money, and reduces their influence.
So they've spent decades sowing the seeds of discontent that govt is inefficient, cannot be trusted, is out to get you, when really they don't want govt curtailing the free market.
By conflating the 'I don't want the govt telling me what to do' with their 'i should be able to make as much money as i can' they've pulled a masterstroke, because any critiscism is seen as standing against individual freedom.
It's baffling to me that the so called conspiracy theorists, and free thinkers haven't seen through this ruse yet and are still their ever obliging lapdogs, allowing them to keep and even expand their hegemony.

I'm no fan of wild capitalism, but it looks like you've got the last few decades in the bag, and the economic system too. So as some plonker on the internet, it's nice to see that someone can tell me where one group have gone wrong.

You don't have to had to that, it covers everything unless you seak to oppress by implementing unlawful "laws" which are the Law of the Sea and have no authority on land unless by consent, of which we are tricked into on a daily basis.

Incidently, do any of you know what a Police Officer means when he asks "do you understand" ? and the impications if you are stupid enough to say yes ? While i'm on it, do any of you know the difference between a "Police Officer" and a "Police Constable" ?? pound to a penny you don't.
