Agreed. Would have been the clubs all-time top scorer, had he not been controversially sold. After scoring 20 goals in 25 games, to help us avoid relegation from the top-flight.

No problem Big Arthur Rowley

I’m assuming you saw him play many times kendall. Incredible record. I loved Syd. Great left back as was Rodrigues. Bobby Roberts was a super player too and watched him play many times in my early days. But purely on his record it has to go to Rowley.
Why was he sold? He went on to score 150+ goals in 230 games at Shrewsbury. Unbelievable

Edited to add. All those games at Shrewsbury were as player/manager!!

As much as I loved watching Rofe play my vote has to go to King Arthur, imagine him playing in the modern game... đź‘Ť đź‘‘

At the end of his first season in the top flight he was sold to Leicester City. There was much criticism from Leicester fans originally towards manager Norman Bullock on signing the relatively unproven Rowley as a replacement for the well-liked Jack Lee.

He holds the record for the most goals in the history of English league football, scoring 434 from 619 league games.

Fulham let him go...

He didn't score many goals when Fulham returned to the top-flight. To our benefit.

Rowley has to be a club legend. When he passed away in 2002, there were obituaries in several leading newspapers. Those obituaries were talking mainly about his time with Leicester.

The only other person on the R list who was more famous would be Don Revie. But he is not famous for his time at our club and achieved far more as a manager, than as a player.

My dad saw Arthur break a goalkeepers wrist with shot and also saw him charged the goalie at the Filbert Street end and bundle him into the back of the net and the whole lot came down, the goal stood too.

When he hit 'em with that lethal left they went like a bullet was'nt as hot with his right, I saw a player who got in the way of Arthur's left foot shot out cold for a while and did'nt play much part in the rest of the match ........passenger on the left wing.
If my memory serves me he snapped a crossbar with a left footer, was'nt blessed with any pace but did'nt need it he left that to the wingers, managers would'nt like him today too bulky, tree trunks for legs,

Left for Shrewsbury just as I had finished my stint in her majesty's armed forces 1958 both my uncles rabid supporters refused to go down anymore when he was sold and there were many more like them.

Very odd to let a great player go and step down a division.

Halliday didn't last long as manager, after the decision to let Rowley go.

Though he created a strong Scottish element as the club, earning us the nickname Leicester Thistle - and laid the foundations for the fantastic 1960s Leicester side.

Rodrigues was right back.

I think Arthur's most productive years was when I was in the Army with Derek Hogg on the left wing did'nt get to many of those games unless I was on leave

Take Arthur Rowley from the list and I would have gone for Rodrigues, as he absolutely defined the full back position. Not just defending, but he could also put in a cross as well. And someone has already said that there are not many defenders in the list. But Arthur's record cannot be argued against. Most of the list would fall into the "very good" category, which shows how lucky we have been over the last half century, but AR is a true great.

Can't exactly remember the year probably
1954/55/56 the only year he was'nt top scorer was when Willie Gardener beat him, must have been the once, because in his 7 or 8 years he was here he topped it from what I remember anyway,
In fact I can only ever seen him overshadowed once the November the day after my pre -med at a place overlooking Viccy Park on the Saturday
We played Lincoln.and gave then a pasting Derek Hines scored 5 times that afternoon was a hell of a crowd because I queued for bloody ages to get in ..........oh the memories
