Plastic

I get the issues with what it does to the planet but why do you get charged for plaggy bags when the supermarkets smother everything in packaging and don’t get pressurised to change?

They do get pressurised from time to time by worthies on media news programmes but it’s not in the supermarkets’ interest to change in case they get loons contaminating the loose stock, especially when Covid is “rife.“ Also, the majority of people would Still rather buy bags of carrots and spuds rather than get them loose.

This is an interesting topic Bills.

Back in 2013 I travelled to Durham for a day of the Ashes test match. All of the disposable beer cups there were made from plant extract and were 100% recyclable. Even then it was discussed between my friends and I why isn’t every take away pint pot made of such materials. We didn’t even discuss coffee cups and lids back then but we did discuss other plastics.

Fast forward 5 years and plastic is the antichrist of materials yet still here we are using some plastics that we cannot recycle, and plenty of others that cannot be recycled even if they are put into a recycling bin.

The technology and materials are there. I’ve had take away coffee in Netherlands in a compostable cup so even that is possible (and my coffee didn’t taste of leaves or seaweed) we just need to invest in the companies delivering this innovation and enforce the change.

they tax the plebs 5p a bag and yet Tesco wrap everything whilst the government witter on about being carbon neutral.

they‘ve made a decent profit during Covid and have started paying their dividend again, whilst not paying business rates on their stores through the government directive.

not that they have lobbying power or anything.

Bill, I’m a bit conflicted here, I take your point absolutely that us peasants are required to pay for our plaggy bags if we have the temerity to turn up with out one whilst they pay a divided to their investors and yet wrap all manner of stuff in plastic. But we do need to keep Mr Attenborough happy with our behaviour. I do sort of yearn for the days when me mam just held her bag open and the bloke on the market tipped two pound of King Teds straight in.
