My day out at Wembley

As some of you now know, I managed to get to Wembley yesterday to watch us progress to the final. Not sure if you’re interested but I thought I’d give a little synopsis of the day.

First of all the tickets. My best mate, a Leicester fan, lives in Willesden which is obviously in the Brent Council area. He was allowed to apply for a ticket plus a guest. The guest didn’t have to live in the area. I believe there was some kind of ballot, but anyway he got two tickets. I had to take a home Covid test on Friday two days before the match, and then have another At a test centre no earlier than 1530 on Saturday. They were very specific about the time, any earlier would make the test invalid

It was all a very surreal experience. Goodness knows how many times I’ve been to Wembley, but this was uniquely different. Arrived from my friends place in Willesden on an empty tube, walking up a pretty much empty Wembley way, with more police and stewards than fans. Arrived at the Covid checkpoint, where I was asked for my email or text of my negative test. Remember they made it very clear in the ticket arrangements that you had to get your test after 1530 on Saturday.
It’s why I had mine done at 1545, the last test of the day at my test centre. All the guy checked was the date, not the time, and whether it was negative. I asked him do you want to check my name on the email against the name on my ticket. No mate not interested in that. And off we went. A simple copy and paste or forward email job would have sufficed. I could’ve been Boris Johnson on there! Once inside the concourse was pretty empty. Only thing that’s changed in there is all the prices have gone up. Water taken off you, (this happens at no other ground if you have the top off) , at the security point/scanner so you had to purchase a Wembley branded half litre of water costing £2.80. A can of Budweiser £6!!
Inside you had to sit at least one seat away from other people, even if you were in the same bubble as them. They were very strict about this. Row in front and behind both empty. No club colours. I put my Leicester flag out on the row in front. Nobody cared, in fact I asked the steward and he said it was fine. Then along came Mr high viz with his senior steward on the back, ordering people including a young girl with her Southampton top on to remove it. Same as our flag. I had my Leicester BR T-shirt on. .He asked me to remove that but I said it’s just a blue T-shirt. He didn’t notice the badge so I got away with it. As I said all a bit strange. I’m amazed we were allowed to cheer the goal!
All in all an interesting experiment, but considering how they were inside the ground, the fact that the Covid test check which is obviously the most important part of it was so simple to replicate for somebody else seems to sum up this whole COVID year.

Oh and I got my 15 mins of fame. On the tv several times! As one mate said. ‘I saw you more times than Tielemans!’

Finally I also thought of something that I could be unique. I wonder if there is anyone else who went to our last cup appearance at Wembley in 69, and our next one which was yesterday.

Great read. To have attended the two games is almost on a par with Jamie's record of appearing in every round of the competition.

I've been a regular home and away-er since around '86 (by regular I mean the vast majority of games, plenty of ever present seasons in that lot, plenty more missing only one or two) and have really missed going to games this last year. Love the whole day out & FA Cup trips more than all other domestic games had a real feel about them. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing but frankly this account does nothing to convince me that watching games in the times of COVID is going to be anything other than a joyless pain in the arse.

Thanks for going first LG, I was wondering what the reaction of the good folk on here would be about posting to say I'd got in. I managed to get an invite through Club Wembley, great day all round, crap game but who cares. I would say there was about 50 City fans spread around the hospitality areas. Managed to get a few songs going but not watched game on TV yet so don't know if we were heard. Saw a few familiar faces in the ground. Definitely agree re showing the text and have already given feedback to account manager on it, we did all the tests etc, also after 3 30 on Saturday, I don't think my text was even read and it wouldn't have been a problem for one person to have taken the test and forwarded the NHS reply to others. Kind of defeats the object. Definitely a weird experience watching a game in a stadium 5% full, similar to watching a reserve game in the old central league.

A young lady in my team at work, Rachana Pandya is her name, lives in Wembley. I thought about asking if she would apply for tickets but decided not to bother as there is no way I would pass for her.

To be honest I think it would have been crap yesterday. 20,000 for a final with fans from both teams will make for a much better experience and I’ll be doing all I can to get a ticket.

Yes but what about all those faacking tests you have to get before and after the game???
Sounds too much of a ball ache to me.

Yes but I don't want swabs stuck down my throat and right up my schnozzer to near the brain just to attend a faacking football match.
I've had the jabs. But I don't fancy that 4 times before and after the game.

I take it you’ve not had any tests G? It’s very simple. 30 secs max. But on a much bigger scale it’s totally unworkable. Once we’ve all been jabbed twice which is just a few months away I suspect it’ll be all systems go.

I recounted the story on the moan in tonight with Stringer

Really good read LG shows what a waste of time the pilot scheme was.
Noticed a lot of Southampton flags didn’t see many of ours, did we not have the Bentleys flag there?
Did you have to have a covid test after also?

Got to send a home test result in on Wednesday

I took my LCFC flag. Nothing big. Draped it over the row in front of us for the cameras to pick up. 45 mins no problem. Stewards cool with it. Suddenly a senior hi viz appeared and told us to put it away. No colours. We waved it when we scored but this fat steward nearly fell over his own fat ankles running down the steps to tell us off.
Basically they were bored

I think Andy King was near the LCFC team area. It looked like him but he had a mask on. Would have been fitting if it was him and he was there!

No he's in Belgium, he was talkin to r5 live yest bout city while he was watching leuven cause he wasnt player, still a lcfc legend despite people giving him grief.

it was great to see our fans celebrating the goal.... just a handful there. Can you imagine if we had 30,000 fans!!!!

well at least we watched on TV and were at Wembley 'in spirit'

Great story LGFox - thanks for sharing. Must have been a surreal experience

Does Rachel wear heavy black eye shadow?

i can understand that attitude for a routine league game...but for the FA Cup Final ????? come on!

i'd be willing to bet bnet would have the jab if it was his only way in to that game :)
