It looks like the Walnut Street photo is smack bang, where Thirlmere Street Gardens now stands. Looking toward the terraced houses on Thirlmere Street, as there was a gap in the houses on the Walnut Street side. The map below shows that at the time, the Thirlmere Gardens was the only open space on Walnut Street...

Thanks Mac, as a City fan from the sixties, but Lincolnshire born and bred I clicked to the link, and what interesting reading, it brought situations to life, I had over an hour reading and only scratched the surface, but will return, all Leicestershire people should give it a read.

More likely the background is Grasmere Street as that's quite a long row of houses.

Did New Bridge Street become Havelock Street?
