I'm almost certain it won't apply to you, but a chap I know got a referral from his GP to somewhere that got him fitted out with a state of the art £3k pair for free, all in a couple of weeks.
I'll ask him for full details when I see him next.
But worth trying the GP route in the meantime I'd say, in case that's all you actually need to know...

Took my mates missus 6 weeks on NHS after referral from GP, apparently specksavers can do it for you in Derby but I’d guess you have to live there
