I used to work there – Adcock and Shipley

Over the years, Leicester has boasted a diverse range of industries from light and heavy engineering, hosiery and textiles, boot and shoe and printing to name but a few. There have also been several large employers in the City, the loss of whom was expected to have been devastating. I suspect not quite as devastating as some smaller towns with a single large employer or industry though.

So, who worked for one of these now-gone employers? Feel free to add threads for companies that I’ve missed.

I started my working life in 1967 at the East Mids Gas office in De Montfort Street. There were a couple of hundred in that huge office and a computer room bigger than my house. Later I had a spell at British Shoe which was an employer to hundreds with a whole fleet of double decker buses. Both these employers have long since disappeared from the city.

I remember having a trip around Acocks (Bridgeport) as part of a school career trip. I did end up completing a 5 year engineering apprenticeship with Beagle aircraft and then on with Preci Spark in Syston, when the aircraft factory closed down. I didn't stop in engineering long as I grew tired of the repetitive nature of the work with CNC machines etc. Good grounding though for later life.
