How many symbols do you need...

It's a long way to Tipperary! It's also a long way to the garage, because your wife won't let you hang this masterpiece in the living room.

Visually, I like it. What really bothers me is the stupid butterfly. Symbolic of change, metamorphosis, rebirth - it reminds us of hope, love and evolution.
As it lands on the shoulder of burning Charles, does it flee up into the Sun*, like Icarus? Only to suffer the same fate it was destined for? The butterfly teaches us of life's fleeting moments.
I give this painting a 5/10. It's a bargain as there is twice as much paint on the canvas, but the butterfly ruins it.

The quality of the painting is fantastic. I agree about the butterfly.

We could go on all day about the symbology, the timing of it, the motivation, what you can see in the background... I can't be bothered, to be honest...

Except, on a lighter note, it reminds me of the Duke of Wellington and Dorian Gray.

Well, the Duke is.. the Duke, a boss with a resume as long as your arm. This is Charles we're talking about. What do you do with a subject like that, from the artist's perspective? A deck of cards or a pregnant mermaid would be better props than a butterfly.

Anyway, it's Victoria Day weekend in Empire Loyalist country - no doubt everyone on this board is enjoying health and safety week. Enjoy the day, gents! 🥳
