Farmers and Fishermen

I don’t blame them for voting so obviously against their own interests .
I blame the liars and conmen who led them to do so . The likes of Gove and Farage cheered on by the Murdoch press will go down in History as the architects of the UKs demise . Sadly they won’t get the punishment their treachery deserves .

There's a series on BBC Cornwall: Fishing Lives about boats from Newquay, Looe and Padstow. Only watched the first two but clearly the quota system isn't working for small individual boats.
The smaller size of the boat means they can only go out for a few hours and basically pack up in winter. The larger trawlwers are out for days and can work all year. The stock doesn't seem to be replenishing even with quotas in place.
The hope seems to be that outside the EU we can regulate our own waters. Larger mesh nets and limiting the numbers of days a boat can fish could lead to increased stock. More smaller boats would mean that Looe (in an estuary so not accesible to the larger trawlers) could flourish once again. Only need a few new boats to massively change the economics.
Problem is of course that 5 owners hold 30% of the UK quota, they own the larger trawlers and will undoubtedly be able to put more pressure on the UK Government to keep things as they are.

The quota system (that was never fair) was negotiated a long time ago and successive governments have don fuck all to put it right. Is that our fault for taking it up the arse or our "friends" in the EU's fault for taking the piss?

The only people who are genuinely 'thick and naive' are those who thought that the EU would, in any way, be a decent trading party to the UK after we voted to leave their club.

They very much resent losing the financial 'cash cow' that was the UK contribution, the huge captive market for EU goods, the dumping ground for their undesirables and criminals and heaven knows what else.

The last thing the EU want is a vibrant, energetic UK, trading with the world from a position of strength, operating just offshore from the sclerotic EU.

The fact that almost the entire UK government/state agrees with the EU position and is desperate to keep us as dependent as possible is a disgrace.

Other opinions on the UK Government's position on the EU are available.

If only we had had a fisheries representative in Brussels who turned up to meetings....

NUKO - I like that... 😉

The UK government has given in to the EU on pretty much every major issue, either by design or incompetence, mostly the former.
As I said other opinions are available.

Daily briefings on how nasty the EU are the norm.

Didn't Mark Francois go off radar about the same time as you started posting?
Nice bit of flag waving.

Would you list these major issues, indicating which the UK gave in on, and for each whether it was by incompetence or design?

It’s fascinating watching the Brexiters getting all lathered up about the Border in the Irish sea that they voted for and insisted on 2 months ago .

Having screwed the Fishermen , Brexit is now screwing Northern Ireland .

Watching absolutely everything Brexiters were told would happen actually happen and the resultant meltdown is comedy gold 😂

It does make frustrating reading...

Farage's voting record while a member of the influential European parliament fisheries committee was utterly dire – over three years, he turned up to one of 42 meetings.... and during the three major votes on the common fisheries policy, Farage failed to vote in favour of improving the legislation.

Aside picking up a large cheque, a big fuck-off grant to "employ" his wife., and a shed load of expenses...what did that smug cunt actually ever do as a representative in Brussels?

Funny how the treacherous weasel hasn’t popped oop North to discuss the latest situation with the Fishermen 🤔

Strange how such an insignificant piece of shit can upset people so easily

I suppose because whilst he should indeed be insignificant, he is afforded a media platform far beyond an insignificant level. Further, again, his insignificance should not be underestimated - however this was an elected official who chose to do fuck all - with the fruits of his lack of labour now impacting massively on the livelihoods of many.

I apologise Sixy you are a significant POS

I doubt whether the insignificant POS's attendance or otherwise made much difference but as you say that doesn't excuse him of his duties. Most reasonably intelligent people have cottoned on to the medias need for sound bites and take them with a large inaccurate dose of salt

I don't disagree...alas I would use up the world's supply of salt fairly quickly if I take everything these wankers broadcast with a pinch of the stuff.

If this is a sea-salt thread, I still haven't figured out what that is.
Is it taken from the ground (farmers) or dragged from the sea (fisherman)?

I like salt the old fashioned way, with side effects of hyper-tension. Wendy's pushed it, but if I'm eating there I've already decided that my sodium intake for the day doesn't matter.

Thats it Teabag. Them is all fick and stoopid, unlike those enlightened that jumped ship for a better life outside the EU paradise, in the capitalist centre of the universe.
So you picked stupid over naive. Fair enough. I think they were naive myself.

So Michael ( we will hold all the cards ) Gove is now begging the EU to revisit the border arrangement in the Irish sea today that Johnson says doesn’t exist .
Brexit comedy hits new heights .

Or extend the grace period until 2023.

You have to admire our European chums for taking the impending shellfish shortage so calmly. Last week when it looked like Tesco might run out of broccoli it was a mad panic over here
