Back to the gym today.

Off shortly.

Have not been able to train since March 2020, too ill to go during the brief respite in the summer, so this is going to be hard.

Start off gently with a bit of CV and see how it goes. My back and shoulders are a real mess so lots of stretching and weights on the mat.

Be interesting to see how the protocols work in practice, will let you know later.

Also, many of the bars and restaurants on the Quay were busy yesterday for some kind of re-opening today. Might well take a walk early evening to see what, if anything, is happening.

Right, just got back in.

Gym operating close to normal, staff are masked but zero requirement for members. General but casual instructions to clean the machines after use and to social distance where you can. A few less machines/stations to help with spacing but that was that.

The training itself was murderous, last visit was March 20th, 2020 so more than a year. A year in which I have broken my right shoulder, been treated for Atrial Fibrillation and had 2 heart procedures.

I would reckon that I did around 30-40% of my pre-lockdown regime, enough to get the endorphins to kick in so feeling pretty good at the minute. Lets see how I feel in an hour or two!

People who pick heavy things up just so they can put them down again and pay to do it are nutters - FACT

I once paid for drinks for a rotund lady and didn't make her a cuppa in the morning, or have any further contact.

Guilty as charged in that case.

I use various machines to exercise my body in a more diverse manner than simply walking, which has been my usual form of exercise in the last year.

I also pick up heavy things in a calculated and controlled manner to exercise my right shoulder that was broken in May last year. The hospital had closed all physiotherapy facilities, I had to make do with a generic leaflet on arm and shoulder workouts which was unhelpful.

Well done, a healthy body gives a healthy mind. My wife bought me a multi Gym so use it a couple of times a week, also have a cross trainer and bike, really feel the difference when I bottle it.

In normal circumstances I like to be able to go out, eat and drink as I like, dance (yes dance) to the bands in the pubs so keeping in some kind of shape as you get older is good.

This last year has been shit in pretty much all respects, getting back to the gym is the first step to normality, should that be allowed.

Thanks for the 'encouragement' hackney... ;)

I have tried with weights at home but the motivation to put in the time is actually quite hard. I have a handful of yoga positions that I use too, similarly hard to feel motivated at home.

It's about finding a regime that works, different machines can be used to work different parts of the body, I find that helps. I definitely 'work' harder in the gym so as not to look a twat in front of the gym bunnies, does not really work at home.

Sounds all too familiar, I don't like gyms and paying for something I can do at home but those dumbells are taking up more room due to the layers of dust on them. All exercise stopped with working from home and great weather.
I was cycling 60 to 90 miles a week to work and thoroughly enjoyed it, lockdown and time in the garden meant I just stopped cycling. Back up to 30 or so now on a mountain bike rather than road bike so that helps.

I would recommend a book by Charles Eugster called age is just a number, This guy worked out and ran well into his 90s, proves we do not have to give up at 65. I found it inspirational.

The night before lockdown we were singing and dancing (silly stuff, very 'end of term') and drinking cheap beer as the pub emptied out the barrels. Didn't get home till nearly 2.00am although we only live 10-15 minutes walk away.

Mind you, I was a 'spring chicken' of just 69 then, bit older now, hence the need to work on my fitness.

Just back from our second visit, still no issues or restrictions of any kind, apart from a few less machines, bit quiet but virtually back to normal. Mrs AFC is pretty desperate to get back to her group classes but has to wait until 17th May.

My workout a little easier in almost all respects, so pleased with that, still a long way to go though to get anywhere near back to normal. Healthwise it has been a difficult year but feeling more positive than for a long time.

It will give them something to do. Hospitals pretty much deserted in this part of the country.

Interestingly, my first AF episode took place about 4 weeks after (the first) lockdown. I was feeling pretty anxious about the situation in general and being unable to train may well have contributed to my troubles.
