Attn Daggers

Hey Daggers, I know that you're the go to geezer when it comes to London to Leicester (and return) trains for home games
Just had a quick look for the Stoke game on Saturday 7th October, no direct trains in either direction! 😒
What's your best recommendation, he needs to be back in London Saturday night as he's flying back to New Zealand on the Sunday

Glad you mentioned this as I was unaware there weren't direct services.
I can go London to Rugby (and cadge a lift) whicch only costs £34, obscene difference in cost.

Hi N. Your aunty C told me you were coming. It looks like there’s a problem on the St Pancras - Leicester line that day ( engineering?) and so all trains are going via Nuneaton

Edited. I’ve sent you a FB message

Cheaper getting off peak returns from London Euston to Nuneaton & then Nuneaton to Leicester especially if you're willing to do the cattle trucks of whatever London Midlands Railway is called these days

09.35 off Kings X to P'boro then P.boro to Leicester £50.90
or
09.32 off Marylebone to Moor St then New St to Leicester £31.70

So separate tickets London - Nuneaton return and then NUN-LEI return for me is £24 total rather than £40! Senior discount

go on split ticketing site you will get a ticket for under £40 return as long as you catch the specified trains

Are they any cheaper than Trainline who offer the option of ticket splitting?
they seem to beat trainline split ticketing but not by a huge amount, but its also worth comparing the sites, if you use the train often or even a few times a year you have to get a railcard if possible

Certainly agrre about a railcard, one long journey and you can get your outlay back.

Almost certainly, from my experience.
But it's (99% of the time) cheaper still to buy the suggested tickets through one of the train companies directly.
Just checked London to Leicester & London to Rugby, Trainline compared to EMR & Avanti, no difference in prices for me.
Makes life easier. I've also checked trainsplit and for my journeys they're actually more expensive than Trainline.

There's certainly more opportunity for savings on routes that aren't just a 'straight-line' journey, eg St Pan to Leicester. I forget how Trainline charge their fee as it's been a while since I bought through them, but Trainsplit list it as an easy to see 'share of saving' charge – which I use to see if it's worth then buying through a trainco site like emr or swt.
I always find it surprising how one or other of the split sites often has fares that don't appear on the trainco sites at all.

That confused me, there were trains allegedly leaving a couple of minutes earlier from Leicester which I know don't exist, just makes it even more difficult to book if you are doing a long journey with changes. Thankfully mine are pretty straight forward but I will try splitticket.com for future journeys to Rugby.

If you take a fast train with no stops the ticket can't be split, if you take a train that stops at lots of places it gives the system an opportunity to "split" the journey.

Yes – and if you book early then 'advance' tickets are nearly always the cheapest option but don't offer any refund. Far from perfect, but the savings really add up for my various football and lengthy family-related journeys. Cornwall is usually good for a decent deal
