There was apparently a lot of tactical voting, so those who would normally have voted Labour (still not a huge amount in that area) voted Lib Dem. Also a lot of self-interest in opposition to HS2, which the Lib Dems oppose.

Interesting result. The labour vote collapsed too, classic protest vote against the Tories, figures suggest the big factor being that the Tory vote just didn't bother to turn out, some presumably voted LibDem, most didn't bother.

I can tell you what the problem is and it is simple.
We have, over the years, allowed the government and it's 'agencies' control over aspects of our public and private lives that it has no business getting involved with.
Small government, low taxes, free trade. Provide a secure country in which that can take place and forget everything else.

Populist policies like low taxes always sounds great until folks can’t get a doctors appointment or their bins don’t get emptied.
The current 3 word slogans approach to policy appeals to those who don’t like to think too much about politics but as is becoming very apparent,
are disastrous in the real world .

Morning Fg. Feeling quite chilled this morning so planning a quiet one, no rants today.
Given the state that western countries have got themselves into (even pre-covid), it is hard to see how my simpler approach could actually be any worse.
My views in this instance would not be populist, it would require a huge change in peoples attitudes and a culture of self reliance and personable responsibility that goes against everything that we have now.
Your comments about doctors appointments is telling, the assumption that health care should be there for the asking is just reliance on an old and broken system. I feel this is the case across all public services, they routinely fail us, cost a fortune yet seem immune to criticism of any serious failings.

Of course you can. Have as many as you need. It's free at the point of delivery. We all pay for it, it's not about having to use your share because of how much you put in.

But if there is no 'delivery'?
I had an acute problem that was more or less controlled by drugs, they kept me alive but the side effects were horrendous and the deterioration in my overall health was noticeable, even on a week by week basis. The waiting list to get on the schedule for the procedure I needed was 10 months, then I would be assessed to see if I would be 'eligible'.
So possibly as long as a year to wait, frankly I doubt if I would have lasted that long.

I don't know how long you would have lasted. They gave priority to Covid. If they hadn't there would have been a lot more deaths. You believe otherwise, ut I was addressing your point about free health care.

So there is a 'caste' system among diseases is there? They prioritise Covid, a disease with a 99.7% survival rate over heart disease that responsible for 27% of all deaths in the UK. Seriously, you think that is sensible?
It's not free. Over the years I have paid thousands in tax and NI for a service that is rationed on the grounds of political policy and government expediency. It is nothing to do with funding, it is just appallingly badly run.
That is the point that I am making, even in 'normal' times the waiting time is a minimum of 10 weeks, this time last year it had increased to 10 months.

Don’t see what’s wrong with hoping for a government which aims to create a fairer more equal society. This lot for all their ‘ levelling up’ bollocks’don’t give a flying fuck about the likes of us .
Priority one - sort out the tax system
. It can’t be right that billionaires and Amazon pay less % than nurses because they pay a fortune to accountants to stash their cash in offshore banks ,
Two - Raise spending on state education in line with our competitor countries . Abolish charitable status of public schools so they have to pay same VAT as state schools .Funnel the millions raised from that into state schools to ensure no class has more than 25.
Three - See looking after older folks with dignity as a priority and funnel the billions raised by number one into the care sector .
