What a great night it was.
Since the loss of the neutral semi final venues this was a real throwback .
40000 odd supporters in Hillsborough split between us and Boro.
It was like most of the plastics had already had their big day out at Wembley and now it was left to more genuine fans.
A rocking atmosphere and the legend of Stevie Claridge made it an unforgettable night.
I had to pinch myself coming home that we had actually won the cup and also qualified for the Uefa Cup.
Fantastic experience.

I remember keeping up with the score on the tv in an Athens hotel on a Ceefax type thing. When we scored I was screaming the place down. Got a call from reception to ask if I was ok as my neighbour had phoned them!!!

MON's finest hour arguably. Boro had a much better team than us on paper but his tactics neutralised them and super Stevie came up with the goods. Great night.

On paper, exactly. Didn’t they get relegated that season aswell? If I remember right they also lost the fa cup final to Chelsea ( quickest goal ever in a final?)

You are right. Ravanelli, Juhninho, Emerson, etc did them a fat lot of good. I just remember that twat Alan Green on R5 berating us for playing negative football in that final replay but we were playing to our strengths so wtf did he know.

Alan Green is a sanctimonious twat. I always remember him criticising Wigan for not selling out a League Cup Semi Final against Arsenal. They'd averaged about 3,000 per game a decade before.

NP is like bloody Dracula. He keeps coming back on this board. I've said before how much I admire what he did for us and I'm a fan. But he is just about retired now so maybe let him lie in peace. He couldn't make another comeback surely?
