22 March 1969 ... W B Albion v Leicester City

0-1 win for the boys in blue. Clarke scores. I’m eating turf due to the surge forward in the Leppings Lane end.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside,
Oh I do like to be beside the sea,
Oh I do like to walk along the prom, prom, prom,
Where the brass bands play: 'FUCK OFF WEST BROM!,
...........................😁

BLUE ARMY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at that game as a 12 year old. My distant recall has me standing behind the goal in a stand with no roof

Is that an accurate memory?

I was there too, Andy, below the upper tier in the Leppings Lane end. A terrible crush. A disaster waiting to happen.

Thank you Monsieur Bruin, as I thought. A song no doubt sung heartily by you 58 plus year-olds, but unlikely that this little Edwardian ditty will be wholly embraced by today's youth.....who would probably only manage the 'Fuck Off West Brom' bit. :)

Cheeky Fucker I'm 42 and know that chant.

Year upon year trip for me in the 60's from Anstey W.M, when we played them 8am start visit the Cape Hill brewery for the trip round, meal and beer included, then on to the match

The five points dropped against Bournemouth and Watford - both relegated- at the end of last season cost us CL. A win on Thursday puts us five points clear of the Scouse. Our biggest game of the season so far ?

Yes it is. Leppings Lane was two tiered (still is) and then had seating in the upper tier with standing terrace on the lower tier. The upper tier was covered and there may have been a bit of a overhang over the standing terrace but too high up to provide any shelter.

In 1969 you still accessed the lower tier through the tunnels beneath the seated stand and entered an open terrace which was without the pens and fencing. They were put in place later, but before the disaster 20 years on.
Without pens and fencing it was still packed and a bit of a crush going through the tunnels.

The other end, where the West Brom fans were, and the end in which Clarke scored, was a large open end.

‘Famous’ West Brom fans ... Adrian Goldberg ... talking about beer, Birmingham boozers and Indian Food. What’s not to like

Apart from the seating being added, the stand is exactly the same today, with the same tunnel underneath the upper tier.

A season defining game, a must win game now the pack have slipped very slightly, or else? Well you already know, it's the dreaded EL.

Christ, it seems that we were all there, I would have been 18, down near the corner flag, left hand side from the spectators point of view. Can't remember any of the game, just the euphoria on the way home after.
