Eight games to go

Four against the top six, and four against the rest.
I think we can do top 4 but it won't be a walk in the park.
We want to be going into those last 3 games with a big cushion.
It aint over til it's over.

We need to pick it up; we have the equal worst points tally of the top 8 from the last five games. That can't continue.

Over the last 4 games we've gained a point on Liverpool and West Ham, Chelsea and Spurs haven't gained on us (that assumes West Ham win on Monday and Spurs win their game in hand).

Sounds good – but a repeat of the last five games in the next five games will be no way at all to prepare for the final three six-pointers...

I look again to our game next weekend. Win that and we gain ground on West Ham and a couple of other teams who are bound to slip up too, and we have a great boost at a timely moment of the season.

Every week some teams from 3rd to 8th will drop points. We need to keep that gap to 4th and 5th.

4 wins and a couple of draws will be enough but it’ll be a different proposition entirely if we have two defeats in the next two games.

It is in our hands. We have points in the bag. It could be 1963 or 2013 or 2019. Or it could be 1996 or 2016. We were bullied on Saturday, we just need a result to get our momentum back. Hopefully having the week to prepare will make the difference.

We will get European football next season it's just where it will be CL or EL. I think that was the mandate at the start of the season to get European football again.

But Daz, with our depth of squad can we cope with qualifying for either. If you can't compete fully and give it a proper go, is there any point in busting a gut trying?

Those 4 games against so called easier opponents won’t be easy. West Brom demolished Chelsea, Palace and Newcastle got well deserved draws against top 7 opponents and Southampton came back to win against a difficult Burnley side despite being 2-0 down. This won’t be easy one bit.

No game is easy. This is not news it’s been the case for years. But we have it in our grasp. More importantly we’re a very decent side.

Daggers is right. We whinge about Carra and co going on endlessly about the second half of our last season. Then we start talking if we think it’s going to happen again. We are a very decent side, so let’s get on with it.

Its the prestige of qualifying though isn't it, give it EL or CL. Everybody wants to play in Europe.

Delighted to see the Admiral scored for Wycombe last night. They were as dead as we were in 2015. Their win has given them hope. The manager said "we now have eight cup finals". That's the spirit. We have to want it as much as our opponents in all our remaining games.

The EL is gradually being shown up as the poisoned chalice that it is for all but the very well-resourced teams who have a realistic chance of winning it – whilst not sabotaging their league chances. Yes, it's a nice little novelty for the likes of Burnley, but of little use to aspiring top 4 clubs.

A thought struck me that perhaps my calculation of how much we earned from it this season might be a bit low, if the local TV revenues are added to the main published distribution figures. But it's quite hard to find EL-only figures, and is likely to make a only a couple of million difference...

Lads, lads, lads. We're going to fuck it up, I know it, you know it, Brendan knows it. Just accept it and chill, have a sandwich, self isolate and wait until next season.
Now all together deep breath, smile and hand out your blue flowers

Agree with some of the comments about it being in our hands, and I agree we have a good side. The issue for me is what's between the players ears ? Are they mentally strong enough to put the end of last season behind them?
This West Ham game will tell me whether we will have the stomach for the fight.
Lose that, and although it won't be over the psychological damage could be irreversible. It will leave Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham right on our tail. It would be hard to retain the positivity given we have the worst fixtures to finish with.

Of course a win would be heaven sent.
It would go a long way to seeing off the Hammers, and reinvigorate the next few games where there are good points on offer.

West Ham is a pivotal and crucial game, I feel we will find out much more about where our season is going after this

Contrary to some on here I thought we showed plenty of fight and energy against MC, so commitment is not an issue for me.
Looking back over the season our resilience has been remarkable given that we are third despite so many of our first choice players have been absent. That is the real story of this season, that their replcements have been so effective.
West Ham did not look so clever when Wolves got their act together in the second half.

I don't get why everyone's flapping, this season bears no comparison to last - for the last few games (this is from the Man Utd game) of last season we were going in to bat with a line up like this

  • 1Schmeichel
  • 2Justin
  • 5Morgan
  • 6Evans
  • 11AlbrightonSubstituted for Gray at 73'minutes
  • 20ChoudhurySubstituted forPraet at 73'minutes
  • 25Ndidi
  • 8TielemansSubstituted forBarnes at 73'minutes
  • 56ThomasSubstituted forHirst at 88'minutes
  • 14IheanachoSubstituted forPérez at 58'minutes
  • 9 Vardy
We ran out of steam and injuries killed us. This year, we only have players coming back who will be comparatively fresher than most and the squad (defensively) is massively deeper than last year. We've lost 1 away league game all season, have just lost our first competitive game in 5 weeks - there is nothing to panic about.

Interesting that. Completely forgot who we played. Morgan, Thomas, Justin ( who was a new kid on the block at the time ), Hamza etc. Wow. Yes Madders will be back and hopefully fresh. Same with Ricky. Also hopefully HB by early May to be available for a few games. Just as importantly we have time on the training ground to think.
It’s like 2016 all over again. Just got to knuckle down.

Squaring the circle. We seem to play well and have a good league position when not having the rigours of playing three times a week including Europe. There is also more chance of injuries to our players with the extra games.

So we play better and maintain a good position in the league. Then guess what, playing well means qualifying for Europe which causes blah, blah, blah. It makes you laugh and proves our squad is not big or good enough for both at the moment.

At the moment...

Also remember that this season has been absolutely crammed in. Ordinarily there are some breaks in the calendar.

If you've been watching them tonight Daz I'm sure you've had a rethink. Beating a shittily inconsistent Arsenal is not an indicator of greatness, neither is getting dry humped by a weakened and ageing Real.
Yes I know but they are the only team if they get their act together who can go on a 7-8 winning run
