Brexit implementation

We are where we are with this and a reversal isn’t going to happen. So how to make it work?

Boris is showing his relative lack of real world experience in not recognising a simple reality about change management which is that those with a vision of change are the least likely to have the skills to make it work. This has to be fixed soon and I don’t expect Williamson, Patel et al have much a future. Sooner rather than later I’d hope.

i guess that’s the point - but the good ones recognise that and get help. The current crop either don’t or won’t accept they haven’t a got a clue about getting stuff done. They‘re good at slogans and headlines but after this it’s just noise.

Given the economic news today it seems DeFfefel has beaten the world in both health and wealth .
Worst death rates and economic devastation .
Remarkable achievement in 12 months

Johnson won’t want anyone in the cabinet who is capable of showing him up, hence the likes of Williamson and Patel keeping their jobs. Almost certainly the most inept cabinet ever.

They signed up to an agreement they either didn't read, or understand if they did read it. Now they are complaining it's not working out how they wanted, but are blaming the EU for keeping them outside of a club they chose to leave. No wonder it's a bit of a mess really is it?

The detail of the agreement was very much a last minute affair, there was no time to set up policy and mechanisms to make it work.

This was either incompetence of the highest order or perhaps deliberate policy to discredit Brexit. Personally I think it is deliberate, but It could be either.

This is why many Brexit supporters wanted to leave on WTO rules, whilst not ideal, the rules and regulations are pretty well understood and we could have taken the 2 year notice to put everything in place.

Getting really irritated with these ridiculous Brexit cheerleaders like dim bulb Kate Hoey who spent 4 years saying they knew what they voted for now whining constantly because they got what they voted for .

Rehashing how we got into the current position is good fun but isn’t going to solve the problem - which I’d suggest is a mixture of the following:

- a significant minority of people aren’t happy, trouble is - that minority are a majority of the people in industry, civil service etc. who actually have the wherewithal to make it happen and at the moment aren’t that fussed about making it work for a host of reasons
- the actual deal is incomplete and in many ways, unsatisfactory across a number of sectors
- COVID is a massive distraction - the aftermath is likely to be messy. Working to fix stuff is likely to hampered by a Government more concerned with covering it’s arse
- we seem to have pissed off most everyone who we’d think of an ally

Watching Gove, his MO seems to ignore reality, blame other people and (blatantly) rewrite history. If that’s the plan we’re fucked until some grown ups get involved.

The moment the Brexit vote was hi jacked by the right of the Tory party as they saw a chance to deregulate the economy and trash workers rights by leaving the CU and SM it was doomed to be bad news for 99% of us . Never once was leaving the SM and CU part of the leave campaign. . Lets face it most folks had never ev en heard of either pre 2016.
Most Remainers would have accepted a soft Brexit .
Unless we find a way to rejoin the SM this don’t end well for our country .

Joining the SM is unlikely for a while yet. It’s not our choice - the EU will have an opinion especially if the EU27 are doing alright. The attached seems quite compelling.

I guess The Dutch , French and Germans will be quite happy to see us sink into obscurity as they take away our standing as Europe’s financial hub and clean up .

Oh that nasty EU, carrying on with business as normal while we stamp our feet demanding attention.

I only dip into these tedious threads occasionally, when there's nothing better to do. But this line above caught my eye, as surely one of the most unlikely and unbelievable attempts to re-write the past 5 years that's ever been posted on here! Really? In what world was that, then??
I keep coming back to wondering where things could have been if all of the time, energy, effort and money expended on arguing and trying to stop Brexit had instead been channelled into making it the best it could have been. Just imagine...

They had ample opportunity to vote for Mrs May's deal (the softest possible Brexit deal)
but they decided to try & cancel it altogether.
The gamble backfired spectacularly & the rest is history.

It was the ERG who voted down Mays deal .
As sn ardent Remainer it was still nonsense but not as damaging to the U.K. as the farce we have now

So they should. It was crap.
Of course it was . Brexit is crap . Whichever of the forms it took was going to damage the country .
We are where we are though so I await to be proved wrong and the promised benefits to arrive with eager anticipation.I suspect I’ll be sadly disappointed as we all will .

I hope the country learns from this debacle to listen to people who know what they are talking about who have lifetime experience in the sectors affected by policy rather than self serving politicians with an agenda .
However soundbites politicians cheered on by the Murdoch press will i’m afraid continue to drive the country into the ground .
Next test . Will De Pfeffel resist the clamours to prematurely lift restrictions in March ? If he doesn’t we will lurch into another lockdown in April -May .

Do you never tire of preaching negativity? I bet there is an exclusion zone around you in the club house!

Quite unusual at times for politicians to look beyond the immediate 5 year term that they've been elected for. Personally, I took a 25-30 year view when deciding which way to vote.

May's deal was better than Boris's in economic terms. ERG voted it down because it was unacceptable politically as there were too many ties to the EU.
If you want the political freedom, the price is the economy.
As long as leavers own up to that I have no problem with them.
It's the twats that voted leave, claimed Britain would prosper, and are now making every excuse including the ludicrous 'the remainers should've tried harder to make it work', because it isn't.
Maybe it will in the long term, but all the indicators say economy will take at least 10 years to recover (and that was prior to covid).
10 years of self inflicted economic hardship might be easy to ride out for some, not so easy for others.
